While Britain, France, and the U.S. were trying to influence Russia through the Czech Legion and military landings, Germany wasn’t thrilled. Why? Because the Entente (Allies) were Germany’s enemies, and they didn’t want them gaining ground in Russia.
Here’s what Count Mirbach, Germany’s ambassador to Soviet Russia, wrote to Berlin on June 4, 1918:
“If the Bolsheviks fall, war on the Eastern Front will resume immediately. We must prevent this at any cost, even if it means giving more financial support to the Bolsheviks.”
📖Source: Dispatch from Ambassador Mirbach to Berlin, dated June 4, 1918. Politisches Archiv des Auswärtigen Amts (Berlin).
Germany wasn’t supporting the Bolsheviks out of love for communism, it was pure strategy. They wanted to keep the peace in the East by taking Russia out of war and the Bolsheviks were the ones who had signed a peace treaty with them (Brest-Litovsk).
If the Whites took over with help from the West, the war might start again, and Germany couldn’t afford that.
There was even a direct order from General Hindenburg, commander of the German Eastern Front, saying:
“Do not allow the Bolsheviks to be defeated by the Whites. If possible, provide them indirect support.”
📖 Source: “Documents of the German Ambassador in Moscow, Count Mirbach”
So yes, while the Allies were backing the anti-Bolsheviks, Germany was quietly helping the Bolsheviks survive.
And guess what? Not long after that, Mirbach was assassinated. Some say he was getting in the way of Western plans, so his sudden death wasn’t exactly… random.

First, he cleaned house.
Stalin arrested and removed many of the very people who had committed mass terror between 1917 and 1925 - those who had killed priests, peasants, teachers, children, often under Lenin, Trotsky, and Sverdlov.
🔸 He brought back Pushkin, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, they returned to schools. 🔸 He reintroduced Russian history into the curriculum. 🔸 He restored respect for national heroes like Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Suvorov, and Kutuzov. 🔸 In 1941, he legalized the Russian Orthodox Church, reopened seminaries, and reinstated the Patriarch.

The First Concentration Camps in Europe Were for Russians: How “Ukrainian Identity” Was Created Through Genocide
In the early 20th century, parts of ancient Rus’ - including Galicia, Bukovina, and Carpathian Ruthenia (now Western Ukraine) were under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Until the late 1800s, the local people spoke Russian, called themselves Russians or Rusyns, followed the Orthodox faith, and saw Russia as their cultural and historical homeland - the true continuation of Kievan Rus’.
But the Austro-Hungarian rulers saw this identity as a threat. They feared the people might support Russia. So they came up with a plan: destroy the Russian identity and replace it with something new, something loyal to the Empire.
That new identity would later be called "Ukrainian."

That is why Stalin proposed a territorial exchange in 1939, moving the border away from Leningrad in return for larger tracts of Soviet land in Karelia. He even offered alternatives, including leasing the territory. The goal was straightforward: to push the frontier far enough west so that the USSR’s second capital, with millions of people and critical industry, would not be within artillery range of a hostile Finland aligned with Germany.
When Helsinki rejected every compromise, it confirmed what Moscow already suspected: Finland was betting on Germany, not neutrality. Even during the Winter War, Finland’s ambitions were expansionist, seizing Karelia and pushing toward Lake Onega. The war was not an unprovoked Soviet land grab, but the brutal outcome of a security dilemma Stalin tried (and failed) to solve through negotiation.
